Vol. 160 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cattle Imports from Six Counties.

Major de Valera

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether he is aware that in the past few weeks heavy imports of cattle from the Six Counties, on which subsidy has been paid, have been sold cheaply at Twenty-Six County fairs to the detriment of farmers in this part of the country, and if he will make a statement on the matter.

A number of certified cattle from the Six Counties have been brought in here in recent weeks, mainly for export to the Continent. The position is being kept under close observation and informal discussions have taken place between officials of my Department and the traders mainly concerned.

An entrepôt trade of this kind is inimical to the interests of producers and I propose to take steps to end it, if this should prove necessary.
