Vol. 160 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Turkey Exports through Waterford.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will state why the exportation through Waterford Port of a large consignment of packed dead turkeys was prevented on Saturday, 24th November; and if he will set out the requirements of his Department in relation to the type and construction of cases to be used for this purpose.

The exportation of the consignment of turkeys to which the Deputy refers was prohibited at Waterford Port on 24th November because several cases were found to be dirty and discoloured and generally not up to the standard prescribed by the Regulations.

The Regulations (S.I. No. 302 of 1950) governing the export of poultry prescribe that cases in which turkeys are packed must be constructed of timber which is well seasoned, white, clean, dry, free from bark, wane and feather, large knots and discoloration. Copies of specifications giving the dimensions of cases and the quality of timber required for their construction are supplied to all licensed exporters.
