Vol. 160 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Advisory Councils and Similar Bodies: Posts and Telegraphs.

Major de Valera

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will enumerate and name, stating the purpose and function of each one, the several advisory or consultative councils, commissions, committees and similar bodies appointed by him since 1st June, 1954.

Only one such body was appointed in my Department namely, the Sub-Postmasters' Consultative Council which I instituted on 6th December, 1955. This council is composed of representatives of the Department and the Irish Sub-Post-masters' Union. Its purpose is to discuss remuneration, allowances, and conditions of service of sub-postmasters, the regulations governing the discharge of Post Office business and suggestions for improving the efficiency of Post Office services. I referred to the setting up of this body in my speech on this year's Estimates (Dáil Debates, Volume 159, No. 9, column 1522).
