Vol. 160 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Offaly Relief Grants.

asked the Minister for Finance if, in view of the acute unemployment in County Offaly, he will consider increasing the amount of the relief grants.

The areas in County Offaly in which employment grants have been given in recent years are the urban areas of Birr and Tullamore and the town of Edenderry. This year these urban areas have already been allocated £1,100 State grants compared with £550 in 1955-56. This year non-urbanised towns, viz., Clara, Daingean and Edenderry have been allocated £850 as compared with £250 for Edenderry last year.

These figures are additional to the £5,000 grant notified to the Offaly County Council on the 24th November, 1956, from the allocation of £200,000, in respect of additional Local Authorities (Works) Act schemes recently made available.
