Vol. 160 No. 15

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Public Transport in Donegal.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he has taken any decision affecting the future of public transport in County Donegal.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce what progress has been made in regard to the reorganisation of public transport in County Donegal, and if he will make a statement on the matter.

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 14 and 15 together.

In December, 1955, my nominees on the G.N.R. Board recommended that in view of the uncertain state of public transport in the Six Counties area there should be no change in the existing transport arrangements in County Donegal for a period of 12 months from that date, when the matter would be reconsidered and a further report submitted by them.

It would not, in my view, be either practicable or desirable to come to any decisions on the subject of transport in Donegal until the report of the Committee of Inquiry into Internal Transport has been received and considered and also until the future pattern of the G.N.R. cross-Border services has emerged.

As I have already indicated, it is my intention to give the local interests concerned an opportunity to express their views before any final decisions are taken in the matter.
