Dáil Éireann debate -
Wednesday, 20 Mar 1957

Vol. 161 No. 1

Election of Ceann Comhairle.

We are in favour of the principle of continuity of office for the Ceann Comhairle and I have pleasure in moving that the holder of that office in the last Dáil, Deputy Patrick Hogan, be elected as Ceann Comhairle. I formally move:

That Deputy Pádraig Ó hÓgáin be elected and do now take the Chair of the Dáil as Ceann Comhairle.

Is mian liom ar thaobh mo chomh-Theachtaí cuidiú leis an tairiscint.

Chuir an Cléireach an cheist: "Go dtoghfar an Teachta Pádraig Ó hÓgáin agus go raghaidh sé i gceannas mar Cheann Comhairle," agus d'aontaíodh leis d'aon-ghuth.

Cléireach na Dála

Iarraim anois, thar bhur gceann, ar an Teachta Pádraig Ó hÓgáin, comhalta do Dháilcheantar Chontae an Chláir, dul i gceannas ar an Séú Dáil Eireann déag seo.

I now call, in your name, on Deputy Patrick Hogan, member for the County Constituency of Clare, to take the Chair of this, the Sixteenth Dáil Eireann.

Whereupon the Deputies rose in their places and remained standing while the Ceann Comhairle proceeded to the Dais.

Standing beside the Chair, the Ceann Comhairle, addressing the Dáil, said:—

A Chomh-Theachtaí, is mór an onóir dom é seo, mé do thoghadh mar Cheann Comhairle na Dála agus is mór liom mar onóir é. Ba mhaith liomsa a rá ar dtúis go ndéanfaidh mé mo dhícheall chun na dualgaisí a bhaineann leis an bpost seo a chomhlíonadh mar is ceart agus gnó na Dála a stiúrú mar is cóir. Tá súil agam go bhfaighidh mé cabhair agus comhar ó gach Teachta sa Dáil chun na dualgaisí sin a chómhlíonadh i gceart. Ba mhaith liomsa m'fhíor-bhuíochas a ghabháil leis na Teachtaí go léir as ucht na honóra móire seo a tugadh dom.

Fellow Deputies, it is indeed a great honour to be selected unanimously to preside over Dáil Eireann and I appreciate it as such. I should like to say at the outset that it will be my care and duty to endeavour to carry out the duties of that office to the best of my ability and to see that justice and fair play are given to every Deputy in the Dáil. I hope that I will get help and assistance from every Deputy in that effort. I desire again to thank very sincerely every Deputy in the Dáil for the great honour conferred upon me.
