Vol. 161 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - C.I.E. Superannuation Schemes.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the date on which he instructed the Board of C.I.E. to submit an amending superannuation scheme for employees in the conciliation grades; whether the scheme has since been submitted, and, if not, what is the cause of the delay.

It was on the 18th July, 1955 that C.I.E. were directed to submit an amending superannuation scheme for their employees.

C.I.E. arranged, at the request of the Trade Unions concerned, to have certain actuarial investigations carried out to determine what pensions could be produced from various rates of contribution and copies of the actuarial report were made available to the Unions on 31st May, 1956. There was a meeting between C.I.E. and the Unions on 27th November, 1956, but I understand that no agreed proposals emerged from that meeting.

C.I.E. indicated in December last that they were preparing a draft scheme. They were asked to consult again with the Unions, prior to the submission of the scheme. I understand that these further consultations have now taken place.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state in respect of the C.I.E. superannuation scheme for wage grade employees (a) the number of employees covered, (b) the income from employees' contributions in the year ended 31st December, 1956, (c) the number of pensioners, and (d) the weekly amount paid in pensions at a recent convenient date.

I am informed by C.I.E. that the number of wage grade employees covered by their superannuation scheme is 13,485; that the income from employees' contributions in the year ended 31st December, 1956, was £25,210; that the number of pensioners is 2,072; and the weekly amount paid in pensions as at 30th December, 1956, was £2,195.
