Vol. 161 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Taxation of Motor Vehicles.

asked the Minister for Local Government if, in view of the fact that it would appear to be in the national interest to have a flat rate of tax on all motor vehicles, irrespective of horse power, he will state what steps, if any, he intends to take to introduce such a rate.

The Deputy's suggestion has already been put forward by various interests on the basis that the proposed flat rate should be reasonably low and that the proceeds should be supplemented for Road Fund purposes by an increased tax on petrol. I considered the suggestion when the Finance (Excise Duties) Vehicles Act, 1952, was being prepared and I decided that its disadvantages would offset any merits which it might contain. I am still of that opinion and accordingly I do not propose to recommend the Government to sponsor amending legislation as suggested.
