Vol. 161 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Definition of Working Classes.

asked the Minister for Local Government if the definition of the working classes as laid down in the Housing of the Working Classes (Ireland) Act, 1908, as amended by the Housing (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act, 1931, has ever been further amended and, if not, if he will take steps to have this definition amended so as to make it reasonable in view of present day circumstances.

The statutory definition of the term "persons of the working classes" to which the Deputy refers has not been amended. This definition is an illustrative and not a limiting definition. The meaning of the term as at present applied by housing authorities derives from their long experience in the administration of the Housing of the Working Classes Acts and there does not appear to be any necessity for further statutory definition at present.
