Vol. 162 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Suspension of Mayo Postman.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will state the reasons for the suspension of Mr. Laurence McGovern, an auxiliary postman in Newport, County Mayo; and whether, if these reasons are due to the regulation precluding the use of a mechanically propelled vehicle for delivery of mails, he will take steps to have this archaic regulation revoked.

Mr. Laurence McGovern, auxiliary for postman, was suspended from duty for persistent insubordination arising from the use without permission of a motor vehicle on his delivery. He subsequently expressed regret for the attitude he had adopted and was restored to duty. He has been given permission to use his motor vehicle, subject to the usual conditions applicable in such cases.

The second part of the question does not arise. There is no Post Office regulation prohibiting the use of a mechanically propelled vehicle for the delivery of mails.

Would the Minister say why he was suspended if there is no regulation?

I have already said he was suspended for persistent insubordination arising from the use, without permission, of the vehicle.

We will give him the next job in Geesala.

I will keep my eye on you.

And I will keep my eye on you.
