Vol. 162 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Rural Electrification in Galway.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the result of the latest canvass carried out by the E.S.B. in the townland of Bunahown, Cashel, Connemara, County Galway; and when he expects that it will be linked with the rural electrification system.

I am informed by the E.S.B. that this townland is situated in the Roundstone area which has already been developed under the rural electrification scheme. The board states that, due to the isolated character of the townland and the scattered nature of the houses, the capital cost of development would be extremely high and that, accordingly, supply could not be made available without the payment of high special service charges. It is hoped to examine the question of extending supply to the townland within the next 12 months.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the result of the latest canvass carried out by the E.S.B. in the townlands of Camus Eighter, Camus Oughter, Kinvara, and Lettermuckoo, County Galway; and when he expects that they will be linked with the rural electrification system.

I am informed by the E.S.B. that these townlands are situated in the Camus area and that an official canvass which was carried out in the late summer of 1955 showed that the percentage of acceptances was 32.8. The area has not so far been selected as its returns did not compare favourably with those for other areas awaiting development in the board's Galway district. The area will be reconsidered in due course and the decision of the board will depend on how its returns then compare with those for other areas awaiting development in the Galway district.
