Vol. 162 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Sale of Cigarettes: Publicity.

asked the Minister for Health if, in view of his decision not to engage in a newspaper campaign to draw the attention of the public to the dangers of cigarette smoking as a causation factor in lung cancer, he will take powers to curtail or eliminate the tobacco companies' newspaper publicity campaign, recently intensified, promoting the sale of cigarettes, until the serious medical doubts about this question are finally resolved.

I would refer the Deputy to my reply to his question on this subject on 5th June, 1957. For the reasons indicated therein, I consider that action on the lines suggested in the present question would be unwarranted.

I have no information to support the assertion that tobacco companies have recently intensified their newspaper advertising.
