Vol. 162 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Cork Schools.

asked the Minister for Education whether there is a report in his Department on the unsatisfactory condition of the national school at Vicarstown, County Cork; and if it is intended to have it replaced by a new school-building, and, if so, when.

The Commissioners of Public Works have advised my Department that the existing national school at Vicarstown, County Cork, is generally unsuitable and that it should be replaced by a new school. A suitable site for the new school has been offered by the Revered Manager and my Department is in communication with him in regard to certain arrangements which will have to be made before a grant towards the cost of the erection of the building can be sanctioned.

It will probably take a considerable time to complete the arrangements in question and I regret that I am unable at present to say when work on the erection of the new school will be commenced.

asked the Minister for Education if he will state the present position in regard to the proposed additional accommodation in the national schools at Carrigaline and Crosshaven, County Cork.

My Department has sanctioned a grant towards the cost of providing an additional classroom at Crosshaven Boys' National School, County Cork, and the Commissioners of Public Works are at present engaged in completing the remaining arrangements which are a necessary preliminary to the invitation of tenders for the work.

As regards Carrigaline Boys' and Girls' National Schools, the Commissioners of Public Works have been asked by my Department to furnish a report as to the feasibility of carrying out a scheme for the enlargement of the schools. I understand from the Commissioners that they are actively considering what would be the most suitable course of action to take in order to provide the required additional accommodation, and that they will report in the case as soon as possible. Immediately on the receipt of their report my Department will communicate with the Reverend Manager.
