Vol. 164 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Irish Steel, Ltd.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce, whether, in view of the fact that there is a sheet mill in the premises of Irish Steel, Ltd., Haulbowline, capable of manufacturing sheet iron, and that the original objects of the company include the manufacture of such sheet iron, he will arrange for the manufacture there of sheet iron which is at present imported, and thus achieve a much needed increase of employment in the area.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will make a statement concerning the result of his recent visit to Irish Steel, Ltd., Haulbowline; and whether there is to be any development there that would increase employment in the district.

I propose, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to take Questions Nos. 9 and 10 together. Irish Steel Holdings Ltd. are examining the possibilities of extension of their activities in the light of present conditions. I am not at present in a position to make any further statement in the matter.

Is the Minister aware that the money for this sheet mill was passed by the House in 1953?

I do not think that is quite accurate.

It is not at all accurate.
