Vol. 164 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Importation of Prams.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware that the importation of foreign made prams is having a severe effect on the industry in the State, and that, as a result, native manufacturers have been forced to place their staff on short time and, in addition, have to depend on an export market for their surplus products, and, if so, whether, in the interests of the employment position of the workers engaged, he will consider an embargo on the importation of foreign made prams or, alternatively, an increase in the present import duty until such time as he is satisfied that the native manufacturers are no longer in a position to supply the home market.

Representations which have been received recently regarding the matter referred to in the Deputy's question are under consideration.

Would the Minister be good enough to undertake to keep in touch with me in regard to this investigation?

I did not hear what the Deputy said.

Would the Minister be good enough, when he has the information, to let me know the result?

Yes, but the Deputy will appreciate that if the investigation requires action, that action may have to be completed before the Deputy could be notified.

I am quite satisfied. My interest is in the 300 people employed. I should like to know the result if the Minister would be good enough to undertake to let me know.
