Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - American Tariffs on Irish Woollen Products.

asked the Minister for External Affairs whether the Government propose to discuss with the United States Government, or have already commenced talks on, the question of the increased tariffs on woollens, which have affected Irish woollen products severely, particularly Gaeltacht products which are of the utmost importance to the people of the Gaeltacht, and if he will make a statement.

Strong representations have repeatedly been made to the Government of the United States concerning the serious effect on the Irish woollen industry of the increased United States duty on imports of woollens and worsteds. I can assure the Deputy that our efforts to secure some alleviation of the position for our exports of woollen products to the United States of America, in particular those originating in the Gaeltacht, are being vigorously pursued. The Irish case against the increased tariff will again be presented next month at a public inquiry to be held in Washington on the effects of the new duty.
