Vol. 164 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Emoluments and Qualifications of Members of Board of C.I.E.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the salary, allowances, and expenses payable to members of the Board of C.I.E., the respective ages of the members, their qualifications on transport, and whether they possess and experience of the working of transport concerns in other countries.

The remuneration of the chairman of C.I.E. is £4,500 a year and that of each of the other members of the board is £500 a year. In addition, the chairman and members of the board, should they be permanently resident more than 15 miles from the G.P.O., are entitled to a subsistence allowance of £2 a day for attendance at meetings of the board.

I have no information regarding the ages of the members. On the question of qualifications and experience I must assume that, before appointing them, the Government of the time was satisfied that the qualifications and experience of the persons concerned fitted them for appointment to the board.
