Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Purchasing Power of £

asked the Taoiseach if he will state the purchasing power of the £ in relation to 1914, 1939, and 1947.

It is estimated, on the basis of the Consumer Price Index, that the equivalent of the quantum of goods and services which could have been purchased for £1 in mid-August, 1957 (the latest date for which figures are available) would have cost 4s. 5d. in July, 1914, 7s. 7d. in mid-August, 1939, and 14s. 0d. in mid-August, 1947.
