It is estimated, on the basis of the Consumer Price Index, that the equivalent of the quantum of goods and services which could have been purchased for £1 in mid-August, 1957 (the latest date for which figures are available) would have cost 4s. 5d. in July, 1914, 7s. 7d. in mid-August, 1939, and 14s. 0d. in mid-August, 1947.
