Vol. 165 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Barley and Wheat Statistics.

asked the Taoiseach if he will state (1) the total quantity of feeding barley of the 1957 crop (a) produced, and (b) sold to millers and co-operative societies, and the average price per ton paid; and (2) the total quantity of Irish grown wheat of the 1957 crop delivered to mills, and the average price per ton paid.

It is estimated that the produce of the 1957 feeding barley crop amounted to 268,000 tons and that, to date, 150,000 tons have been purchased by millers, merchants and co-operative societies. The average price paid was £19 18s. per ton.

Of the 1957 wheat crop, 407,000 tons (green) had been delivered to flour mills, wheatenmeal mills and permit mills by the end of January, 1958. The average price paid was £29 per ton.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary in a position to say if these two figures of yield represent a record for all time?

I could not say. I doubt if they do.

Ask your colleague.

If the Deputy puts down a question on that matter, it will be answered.

Why do you ask the question now, so?

So as to prepare you. I do not want it to come as a shock to your system.
