Dáil Éireann debate -
Wednesday, 26 Feb 1958

Vol. 165 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Transatlantic Air Service.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce when he proposes to announce the terms of the agreement between Aerlinte and Seaboard and Western Airlines Limited, for the operation of a transatlantic air service; and whether he will afford to the Dáil an opportunity in the immediate future for a debate on the project.

I would refer the Deputy to the statement I made in reply to a question on this subject in Dáil Éireann on the 12th February.

The operating arrangements are based on a revival of the agreement concluded with the American company in 1952, subject to certain changes designed to bring that agreement up to date. The most significant change is that the service will be operated initially not with D.C.4 aircraft, as provided for in the 1952 agreement, but with Super-Constellations.

I informed the Deputy in reply to a supplementary question on the 12th February that I would consider communicating the full terms of the agreement to the Dáil but that prior consultation with the private interests concerned would be necessary. As soon as I am in a position to do so, I will give any further information that is relevant.

An opportunity for a debate on this subject will arise in the ordinary way on the Estimates for my Department.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether excursion fares only will be charged on the new transatlantic airline to be operated by Aerlinte, or whether, in addition, there will be accommodation for tourist-class passengers.

Initially at least, the Aerlinte service will be a one-class service, based on the new economy class fares.
