Vol. 165 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Forestry Act Regulations: Louth Afforestation Schemes.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state whether any rules or regulations have been made under the Forestry Act, 1956, and, if so, if he will give details.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state what progress has been made in connection with the preparation of afforestation schemes for the Omeath, Carlingford and Ravensdale areas, County Louth.

I propose with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to take Questions Nos. 85 and 86 together.

Regulations under the Forestry Act, 1956, have not yet been made but the framing of the necessary regulations will be expedited as far as practicable.

Progress on land acquisition by my Department since information on these areas in County Louth was last given to the Deputy has been as follows— the area of 36 acres at Cornamucklagh. North of Omeath was acquired in October, 1957; agreement to purchase an area of 84 acres in Ballyonan, between Omeath and Carlingford has been reached; negotiations to purchase areas of 123 acres in the Liberties Commons area and 38 acres in the Ballymakellett, Ravensdale area will shortly be opened. Recent offers at Ballanerty, Castletowncooley and Earlsquarter in the vicinity of Mullaghattin are in the early stages of investigation.

The position remains unchanged as regards the commonage areas totalling 580 acres between Cornamucklagh and Corrakit, of 450 acres at Ballymakellett and a further area of 152 acres in the Liberties Commons area.
