Vol. 166 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Proposal of Clothing Manufacturer.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether his Department have any information in regard to the proposal referred to by Deputy Briscoe of an American clothing manufacturer to use the facilities of small clothing factories throughout Ireland for his clothing manufacturing process and, if so, if he will state the location of the factories and the amount of employment likely to arise from the implementation of the proposal.

The statement appears to relate to a firm of clothing manufacturers in U.S.A. whose representatives discussed with me in June last a proposal for manufacturing garments in Ireland for export to U.S.A. The firm concerned stated that their interest in the idea arose out of their success in using Irish tweed for the production of women's garments, and a discussion which they had with Deputy Briscoe during his visit to America last year. No further details can be given.
