Vol. 166 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Batch and Pan Bread Units.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that certain bakers and distributors of bread are selling batch and pan bread in units of one and three-quarter pounds weight and, if so, if he will have the bakers and distributors who do so prosecuted.

The law requires that bread shall be sold by weight only and not by measure, and if bakers adopted the practice referred to by the Deputy they would not be contravening the law provided they did not misstate the weight of the loaf.

A purchaser of bread may ask the seller to state the weight of the loaf and it is then open to the purchaser to have the loaf weighed by the local inspector of weights and measures. If the weight so ascertained is less than the weight represented by the seller proceedings may be taken against him.

The need to improve the law in regard to the sale of bread is at present under consideration.
