Vol. 166 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Surgical Treatment in Sanatoria.

asked the Minister for Health whether all forms of cardio respiratory abnormal conditions may be surgically treated at (1) the Western Regional Sanatorium, (2) the Southern Regional Sanatorium and (3) the James Connolly Memorial Hospital, Dublin, and if so, if he will state the dates on which these forms of surgical treatment were commenced in each of these institutions; and if such treatment has been discontinued in any of these institutions, if he will state in respect of what conditions and for what reasons, and when the decision to discontinue was taken.

Cardio respiratory abnormal conditions, other than those requiring open heart surgery using cardiac bypass, which is still regarded as being in the developmental stage, are surgically treated at the institutions mentioned.

Cardio respiratory surgery commenced on the following approximate dates (1) in the Western Regional Sanatorium in May, 1955; (2) in the Southern Regional Sanatorium in November, 1955, and (3) in the James Connolly Memorial Hospital, Dublin, in March, 1956.

This form of treatment has not been discontinued in any of these institutions.
