Vol. 166 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Assistance Grants.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he is aware that the manager of the Dublin Board of Assistance has given instructions to relieving officers to discharge and reduce assistance grants in many cases and, if so, if he will state who so instructed the manager.

I am not aware of the matter referred to by the Deputy. In so far as home assistance is concerned, however, the position is that each public assistance authority is empowered by the Public Assistance Act, 1939, to determine what public assistance is necessary and proper in each particular case.

I should like the Parliamentary Secretary to know that my statement is an understatement. It is general; there is a general reduction all round. It is a shame, in view of the circumstances.

I understand the Deputy is a member of the local authority concerned. I suggest that he raise the matter there.

I have raised it here so that the world will know what is going on, without secrets.
