Vol. 166 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Sheep Exports to France.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will state the position relating to the export of sheep to France.

The issue of licences for the importation of sheep and mutton into France was suspended in June, 1957. No change occurred until January, 1958, when the resumption of imports for specified monthly global quantities was announced. Since then the exportation of mutton and lamb to France from this country has been proceeding.

Would the Minister give the amounts concerned, the monthly numbers for which licences have been given by the French authorities?

I do not know if they were given on a monthly basis.

Can I put it in an easier way? Can we get as many licences as we want?

I would not think so. We have to compete through the process of a tender.

Could the Minister state if it referred to dead sheep as well as live sheep?

Both, but it is all dead carcases that have been sent from this country.
