Vol. 166 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Coal Imports through Dublin.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that the importation of American coal through the port of Dublin is adversely affecting provincial ports, and if he will state what steps he proposes to take in the matter.

As there is no official control over the importation or distribution of coal, I have no function in this matter.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that as a result of the present system whereby American coal is imported through Dublin, imports through Dundalk port have been very much reduced for the past while back? If it is contended that American coal can be brought into Dublin cheaper, would it not be cheaper still if it were imported direct to Dundalk and thus obviate the transport costs from Dublin?

Would the Parliamentary Secretary not consider it more advisable in the interests of the country that the importation of American and British coal should be cut out and our native resources of peat expanded?

In regard to the second supplementary, that matter does not arise on this question. So far as the supplementary directed to me by Deputy Coburn is concerned, I have nothing further to add to what I have already said, that I have no function in the matter. It is a matter for private enterprise.
