Vol. 166 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Emigration to Countries other than Britain.

asked the Taoiseach whether he can give any indication as to the rate of emigration in the last 12 months to countries other than Great Britain.

The number of persons who emigrated by sea in 1957 to countries other than Britain and the Six Counties and who travelled through ports in the State was 3,582. Corresponding information in respect of persons who travelled via ports in Britain or the Six Counties is not yet available. Particulars of the number of emigrants who travel by air are not compiled. In this connection, however, it may be stated that the number of passports issued in 1957 to persons going to employment or permanent residence was 11,505, and on 6,316 of the application forms for passports it was stated that the persons concerned intended to emigrate by air. In 4,653 cases the intention was to travel by sea and in the remaining 536 cases no information was given.
