Vol. 166 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Regional Tuberculosis Sanatoria.

asked the Minister for Health if he will state the number of regional tuberculosis sanatoria completed since February, 1948, the total number of beds provided for, the total cost of these institutions, and the approximate number of patients accommodated therein at present.

Three regional sanatoria were completed since February, 1948, under the Tuberculosis (Establishment of Sanatoria) Act, 1945.

In addition, three other large-scale sanatoria, which could be regarded as regional in character, were provided since that date.

Apart from the foregoing, two large institutions, originally built for other purposes, were converted for use as sanatoria since February, 1948. They have since reverted to the use for which they were originally planned.

The total number of beds provided in the institutions at present in use is 2,797. The total cost of building and equipping them was about £7,906,000. The number of patients accommodated in these institutions on the 28th February, 1958, was approximately 2,400.
