Vol. 166 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cork Mail Delivery.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs whether he is aware that within recent weeks direct delivery of mails from Macroom to Keimaneigh post office was withdrawn with the resultant late delivery of post in the latter area; and, if so, if he will take steps to rectify the position, having regard to the fact that the mail vans still pass through Keimaneigh each morning.

As part of a recent revision of postal arrangements in Macroom and neighbouring areas, a contract mail service now operates between Macroom and Keimaneigh in lieu of a departmental service. Certain delivery work in the Keimaneigh area formerly done by the postman-driver is now performed by a postman working out of Ballingeary sub-office. The adverse effect on postal delivery times in the Keimaneigh area has been slight, a matter of ten to 15 minutes, and delivery is normally finished there by 11 a.m. Considerable economy has resulted from the reorganisation and reversion to the former arrangements would not be justified.

My information is that the delay is two hours and, in view of the fact that the mail van passes the door each morning, would the Minister look into the matter again?

I am afraid the Deputy's information is wrong. A change would result in a slightly later delivery to about ten residents.
