Vol. 168 No. 2

Committee on Finance. - Vote 63—Social Assistance.

I move:—

That a sum not exceeding £13,708,000 be granted to complete the sum necessary to defray the Charge which will come in course of payment during the year ending on the 31st day of March, 1959, for Old Age Pensions and Pensions to Blind Persons, Children's Allowances, Unemployment Assistance, Widow's and Orphans' Non-Contributory Pensions, and for Sunday Miscellaneous Social Welfare Services, including Grants.

I was not here for the Parliamentary Secretary's opening statement yesterday. Did he explain the reduction in the free fuel scheme?

I forget the point the Deputy raised.

There was a reduction. Was it because the fuel had decreased or was the same——

Our information is that there is maladministration in the free fuel scheme. I shall not say any more than that now. We are having the matter thoroughly investigated so that those entitled to free fuel will get the value of what they are entitled to receive.

May I put down a question about the matter to the Minister?

If the Deputy puts down the question in a month's time, I may have some information.

Vote put and agreed to.
