Vol. 168 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Franchise Census Forms.

asked the Minister for Local Government if, in order to obtain regular and up-to-date statistics of population and emigration, he will amend the regulations governing the franchise census taken annually in September or, if necessary, introduce legislation, to require householders to include on the franchise census form the number of persons under 21 years of age.

I am satisfied that the adoption of the suggestion contained in the first part of the Deputy's question would cause confusion in connection with the compilation of the voters' lists and also that it would not enable a reliable census of population to be compiled. The answer to the first part of the question is, therefore, in the negative, and accordingly, the remainder of the question does not arise.
