Vol. 168 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Price of Loaf Milled from Home-Grown Wheat.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state (a) the retail price of a loaf baked from flour milled exclusively from home-grown wheat, and (b) how much subsidy would be required to keep the price at its present level.

The prices of bread and flour are not at present subject to statutory control, but, on the basis of the figures available in my Department, it is estimated that the use of flour of 72 per cent. extraction made exclusively from home-grown wheat would entail an increase of about ¾d. in the price of the 2 lb. loaf. If this increase were to be offset by a subsidy the amount required as subsidy would be approximately £655,000 a year. To make a corresponding adjustment in the price of a similar flour used for home baking, would involve an additional sum of £440,000 a year.
