Vol. 168 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Hospitals' Trust Fund.

asked the Minister for Health if he will state the total capital expenditure to which the Hospitals' Trust Fund was committed at 31st March, 1958.

At the 31st March, 1958, the Hospitals' Trust Fund was committed to a capital expenditure of approximately £2,000,000 representing grant payments outstanding mainly in respect of hospital building works completed but not fully paid for and works in progress.

The carrying out of certain other capital projects included in the hospital building programme, in respect of which definite undertakings were given prior to 1st April, 1957, to the promoters that these projects would be allowed to proceed, together with a small number of minor commitments in respect of urgent repairs and improvements which have been sanctioned since, would necessitate further grant payments estimated at approximately £10,000,000. The total capital expenditure, therefore, to which the fund was committed at the date in question is approximately £12,000,000.

asked the Minister for Health if he will give particulars of expenditure on (a) capital and (b) current purposes from the Hospitals' Trust Fund during each year ended 31st March in the period 1948 to 1958, inclusive.

As the reply contains statistics, I propose, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to circulate in the Official Report a statement giving the desired information.

Following is the statement:—

The above figures include payments authorised but not necessarily cleared by the Hospitals' Trust Board for payment before 31st March each year.

In regard to the figure for grants for current purposes in 1956-57, owing to the position of the Fund it was not possible to meet certain current liabilities accruing in that year and these had to be carried over and met in 1957-58.

asked the Minister for Health if he will state the annual income of the Hospitals' Trust Fund for each year ended 31st March in the period 1948 to 1958, inclusive.
