Vol. 169 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Introduction of P.A.Y.E. System.

asked the Minister for Finance whether he has yet received a report from the Commission on Income Taxation in relation to the introduction of a system of P.A.Y.E.; and whether the commission have considered in particular its application to State and semi-State employees.

As stated in reply to a question by Deputy Tierney on 29th May, 1958, I understand that the commission has been giving particular attention to the problems associated with the method of collection of tax payable by employees and may be able to furnish an interim report on the subject. I have no further information in the matter.

I should, perhaps, add for the Deputy's information, that State employees and railway employees are already subject to statutory deductions of income-tax from their salaries and wages. In addition, voluntary deduction schemes are already in operation in several of the State sponsored organisations.
