Vol. 170 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Re-Opening of Limerick Weir Gap.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will take steps to have reopened the gap in the Thomond Weir, Limerick, so that a greater number of salmon may reach the upper reaches of the Shannon.

The Fishing Weir Operation (No. 2) Order, 1957, which authorises the operation without a free gap of the Thomond Weir, Limerick, also provides that of the fish entering the weir during the period from the 1st February in any year to the 19th July following there shall be released upstream not less than 18/25ths of such fish. Outside such period all fish entering the weir must be released upstream after counting.

The operation of the Thomond Weir in accordance with this Order is kept constantly under observation by the Limerick Board of Conservators and the position as to the maintenance of salmon stocks in the River Shannon generally is kept under review by the Fisheries Division of my Department. I am satisfied in consequence that 18/25ths of the fish entering Thomond Weir are duly released and that that measure of escapement is adequate for the maintenance of stocks in the river.

Is the Minister aware that the closing of this gap is having a very adverse effect on the supply of salmon particularly on the upper reaches of the Shannon due to the fact, amongst others, that the fish cannot get down the river to the sea after spawning and also that the natural flow of the salmon up river is impeded by this contraption?

I understand that a sub-committee of the Limerick Board of Conservators is going to study the operation of the weir under the Order, so that there may be some further report.

Is the Minister prepared to consider the findings of that committee?

In accordance with the Fishery Laws I shall consider any representations, but the Deputy knows the conditions under which alterations can be carried out.
