Vol. 170 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Use of Native Wheat: Report on Investigations.

andMr. T. Lynch asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will arrange for publication of the final report of the investigations that were carried out by the Institute for Industrial Research and Standards into the question of increasing the use of native wheat in grist.

Having regard to the number of different varieties of wheat grown in this country and the variations in climatic conditions, it is desirable that the investigations which are being carried out by the Institute for Industrial Research and Standards should cover a number of harvests. An interim report dealing with the milling and banking qualities of Irish wheat from the 1956 harvest has already been presented and printed copies will shortly be on sale.

I am informed by the institute that they hope to be able to submit a further interim report, relating to the 1957 harvest, in the course of the next few months, and that when the wheat from the current year's harvest has been examined, a final report will be prepared. It is not expected that this work will be completed for another year. It is intended that the reports as they are received will be made available to the public.
