Vol. 170 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Surplus Wheat.

asked the Minister for Agriculture how the figure of 23,000 tons of surplus wheat available on 30th June was computed, taking into consideration essential stock requirements.

The figure of 23,000 tons was computed as being the balance on hands after deduction from the surplus as on 1st January, 1958, namely 117,000 tons, of disposals in the meantime for animals feed, for export, for meeting the reduced flour extraction rate and for biscuit flour.

Could the Minister say on what date in July it is intended to make the estimation of the surplus in the current crop? I think the Minister said that on some date in July that estimate will be made.

I suggest that is an entirely separate question. I have not really considered that matter.

What is the figure considered essential for stock requirements?

What does the Deputy mean by that?

The carry-over figure?

About 50,000 tons.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will give particulars of the amount of surplus seed wheat exported during the six months ended 30th June, 1958, and the average price per ton.

Three hundred and fifty-two tons were exported at an average price of approximately £21 per ton f.o.b.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will give particulars of the amount of surplus wheat sold on the home market during the six months ended 30th June, 1958, and the average price per ton.

Approximately 62,000 tons of surplus wheat were sold on the home market in the six months ended 30th June, 1958, at a price of approximately £24 per ton exclusive of quantity discounts and delivery charges. The net price to Grain Importers (Eire) Limited, is estimated at about £22 a ton.
