Vol. 170 No. 4

Committee on Finance. - Vote 19—Supplementary Agricultural Grants.

I move:—

That a sum not exceeding £3,820,000 be granted to complete the sum necessary to defray the Charge which will come in course of payment during the year ending on the 31st day of March, 1959, for the increase of the Grant to Local Authorities in Relief of Rates on Agricultural Land (No. 35 of 1925; No. 28 of 1931; No. 23 of 1939; No. 36 of 1946; No. 36 of 1953; and No. 18 of 1956).

Does this mean the Minister anticipates the local authority rates will be less this year?

No. It is anticipated the rates will be somewhat higher this year but last year it was anticipated the rates would go up by 4 per cent. but actually they did not go up at all. They will be up by 3 per cent. but that means they are still lower than last year.

I thought it was compared to actual.

They will be 3 per cent. higher this year than last year.

Vote put and agreed to.
