Vol. 170 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cross-Channel Services.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he has had the operation of the cross-Channel passenger services under review; and whether it is considered that the present arrangements for the peak holiday periods of July and August are satisfactory.

The provision of adequate travel facilities for cross-Channel passengers is primarily a matter for the shipping companies, but, as the House will be aware, difficulties at the peak periods occurred in earlier years and I have been pressing for a long time for the augmentation of these facilities. At my request, Bord Fáilte Éireann has interested itself particularly in this matter and has been in close liaison with the shipping companies. I understand from Bord Fáilte that the shipping companies consider that the provisions made this year are adequate to ensure that at the peak periods the traffic will be properly catered for.
