Vol. 171 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Afforestation in North Kerry.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state in respect of the North Kerry area (a) the acreage held by his Department for afforestation, (b) the acreage it is proposed to plant in the coming year and (c) when it proposed to commence work so as to assist the unemployed in these areas.

The total productive area held by my Department for afforestation purposes in North Kerry is 1,244 acres of which a total of 618 acres has been planted. It is intended to plant a total of 183 acres there in the coming season (83 acres at Brosna Forest and 100 acres at the newly-established forest at Castlegregory in the Dingle peninsula). Preliminary work in connection with this programme is at present in hands; it will be possible to provide employment for about 15 extra men later in the season (5 at Brosna and 10 at Castlegregory).
