Vol. 171 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Extensions of Rural Electrification.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce when the E.S.B. propose to extend rural electrification to the Moyer area, Kingscourt, County Cavan.

I am informed by the E.S.B. that the Moyer rural area has been considered for selection by the board on a number of occasions but has not so far been selected as the returns for the area did not compare favourably with those for other areas awaiting development in the board's Dundalk district. The area will be reconsidered by the board in due course and the decision of the board will depend on how the returns then compare with those for other areas awaiting development in the Dundalk district.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will indicate when it is proposed to extend the rural electrification scheme to all parts of the Berehaven peninsula.

I am informed by the E.S.B. that the Berehaven peninsula, excluding the practically uninhabited central portion, comprises the following rural areas, namely: Bere Island, Castletownbere, Cahermore, Tuosist and Bonane. Of these the Bere Island and Castletownbere rural areas have already been developed under the rural electrification scheme. An official canvass was commenced some time ago in the Cahermore rural area but, in view of the poor response, it was not proceeded with.

The Tuosist and Bonane rural areas have been considered for selection by the board on a number of occasions but have not so far been selected as the returns for the areas did not compare favourably with those for other areas awaiting development in the board's Tralee district. The areas will be reconsidered by the board in due course and the decision of the board will depend on how the returns then compare with those for others areas awaiting development in the Tralee district.
