Vol. 171 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Referendum Costs.

asked the Minister for Finance if, when replying to previous questions regarding the estimated cost of a referendum to amend the Constitution, he took into account the estimated cost of publicity, advertising and other such expenses which might be incurred by persons or bodies actively interested in such a referendum; and, if not, if he will now give an estimate of such expenses based on the returns of election expenses made by candidates at the last general election.

I have no information as to the amount of the expenses of the types referred to by the Deputy and I did not take them into account in my previous reply. I am not in a position to give any estimate of such expenses.

Would the Minister agree that the figure of £78,000 mentioned by him last week, or the week before, is purely the amount involved in State expenditure and that it does not take into account other possibly considerable expenses that will be incurred in connection with the referendum?

I am afraid that the Parties must stand their own expenses.

The Minister will agree that this figure did not take those expenses into account?

The £10,000,000 of Deputy McGilligan.

Does it take into account the expenses involved by local authorities in relation to this matter?

I do not know if there are any such.

I suggest there are, such as lighting, particularly in the winter time?
