Vol. 171 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Collection of Land Charges.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state (a) the total amount collected in annuities, land project charges, quit rent, etc., each year by his Department, and (b) the total cost or approximate total cost of the Collection Branch.

Following are replies to the two parts of the question:—

(a) The total amount collected in land annuities and annual sums, reclamation annuities, quit rents, tithe rents, etc. in the year ended 31st March, 1958, was £2,622,520. In addition a sum of £48,745 was collected in respect of redemptions. The total annual collection in normal circumstances would vary little from year to year.

(b) The total cost of the Collection Branch, including all chargeable items, is estimated at £138,150 for the year ended 31st March, 1958. Included in the chargeable items are provision for superannuation, proportion of cost of other Land Commission personnel indirectly concerned with collection work, cost of stationery, telephone, postage and accommodation, service and maintenance charges. Cost of collection therefore in the year ended 31st March, 1958, was 5.17 per cent. of the amount collected.
