Vol. 171 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Frontier Charge for Vehicles.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will consider the abolition of the 2/- request for vehicles crossing the land frontier after the hour of 9 p.m.

The 2/- charge referred to by the Deputy goes towards relieving the general taxpayer from the expense involved in maintaining this special late attendance of customs officials at certain frontier posts to facilitate cross-Border traffic. As I stated in reply to the Deputy on 16th May, 1957, in response to a similar question asked by him, I am not prepared to remove the charge.

Is that even in spite of the fact that when I was Minister for Finance the Minister for Local Government castigated me violently about this charge?

He did not realise the amount was £25,000.

No; he is growing up and learning things. We are teaching him things by degrees.
