Vol. 171 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Whiskey Exports.

asked the Taoiseach if he will state the total quantity and value of exports of Irish whiskey for the first nine months of the current year, and for the same period of the previous year.

In the period 1st January to 30th September, 1958, the total quantity of Irish whiskey exported was 122,286 proof gallons and its value (f.o.b.) was £257,319. In the corresponding period in 1957 the figures were 141,433 proof gallons and £268,933.

Can we take it that there has been a reduction rather than an increase in the export of whiskey?

There has been an increase in consumption, the Deputy will be glad to know.

The Minister has not been too correct in his forecasts in relation to Irish whiskey.

Do these figures not make the Minister realise still further the appalling mess he made in preventing Irish whiskey distillers going in and getting the market the Scotch people got in 1943 and 1944?

The Deputy did not do much for Irish whiskey when he was in control.

I think I drank a fair share more of it than the Deputy.

I am talking about the export of whiskey.
