Vol. 171 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cavan Council Grants.

asked the Minister for Local Government if in view of the closing of railways in County Cavan and of the blocking of cross-border roads he will consider making an additional grant of moneys for roads to the Cavan County Council.

As regards the problems created by the recent closing of railway lines, I would refer the Deputy to the reply being given to-day to similar questions put down by Deputy Mooney.

As regards the special problem of road users affected by the blocking of cross-border roads in County Cavan, I understand that the Cavan County Council have devoted portions of their ordinary Road Fund grants towards the improvement of alternative roads in a number of the places affected.

asked the Minister for Local Government if in view of the high unemployment rate in County Cavan he will consider making an additional grant to the Cavan County Council for roads and other public works.

The Road Fund grants to county councils for the present year were allocated and notified in full at the beginning of the year. Grants for the specific purpose of providing employment are dealt with by the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Finance.
