Vol. 171 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Development of Pig Production.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether the Advisory Committee on the Marketing of Agricultural Produce have made an examination into the question of putting the pig industry on a more stabilised basis; and, if so, if he will give details of their recommendations.

A report on the export of bacon and other pig meat has recently been received from the committee. The question of publishing the report has not yet been considered.

In view of the serious situation existing in the West of Ireland in regard to the pig industry, would the Minister not consider that there is an urgent necessity to ensure that the pig industry is stabilised and that this report the Minister has is put into effect at the very earliest possible stage?

I am not in a position to say whether or not, even if what the Deputy suggests is correct, the application or the implementation of the report would have the result which he has in mind.

Can I take it that the Minister is aware of the fact that the pig industry is in peril at the moment in the west? All the agricultural committees and interests affected, including the farmers, the producers, are very perturbed at the moment in connection with this matter.

I am aware of quite a number of things that concern that trade very intimately.

The sooner the Minister wakens up the better.

Could the Minister say how long the present price of pigs will continue?

I do not know. I am not in the humour to make any long distance prophecies.
