Vol. 174 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Retirement Age of Temporary Civil Servants.

5.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will consider extending the retiring age to 75 years in the case of temporary civil servants with old I.R.A. service.

Civil servants in the category referred to by the Deputy may be retained up to 75 years of age if they hold a certificate under the Military Service Pensions Acts or have been granted the 1916 Medal or the Service (1917-21) Medal without bar or have served in the Civil Service of Dáil Eireann. Retention is subject to the conditions that the officer's health, conduct and efficiency continue to be satisfactory and that appropriate employment is available.

What is the explanation of being awarded a medal "without bar"? Presumably, if they were awarded the medal with the bar it would give them a better entitlement?

With a bar, a person would be entitled to a pension as well.

From the Minister's reply, it would appear that medal-holders with the bar are excluded from the benefit in this question.

I said if he holds a certificate under the Military Service Pensions Acts or other things—medals.
