asked the Minister for Justice if he will state in respect of each month in 1957 and 1958 the number of persons charged with offences under the Offences Against the State Act, 1939, and in respect of such persons the number who were (i) convicted and (ii) acquitted.

The answer is in the form of a tabular statement which, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, will be circulated with the Official Report.

Following is the statement:—

NUMBER of persons charged under the Offences Against the State Act, 1939, month by month during years 1957 and 1958, and the number of those convicted and acquitted.

* Seven persons were arrested on 31st December, 1956, and were charged under section 52 of the Offences Against the State Act, 1939. The charges were dismissed on technical grounds on 2nd January. The men concerned were re-charged, however, and on 14th January, 1957, all seven were convicted. Accordingly the seven acquittals on 2nd January are not included in the figures above.
